Industry Insights

B2B Search works when buyers are ready to compare.

B2B audiences may be smaller, but Search becomes valuable when a decision-maker is actively looking for a provider. The challenge is turning that search into an enquiry worth following up.

What Makes This Industry Different

How do you get better B2B leads, not just more of them?

The B2B search market is usually smaller than consumer markets, but the value of one customer can be much higher.

That makes keyword intent, service-page clarity and lead quality more important than simply generating the lowest CPL.

What we usually see

Which enquiries are actually worth following up

Broad keywords bring traffic that rarely becomes an enquiry

Someone searching an informational term is usually still reading up on the subject and has no provider in mind yet. We keep those terms out of the main campaigns, and judge a keyword on the enquiries it produced rather than the traffic it brought.

A small group of high-intent terms carries most of the useful enquiries

The rest of the keyword list can look busy and still contribute almost nothing to the sales pipeline. We fund that small cluster to a high impression share first, and treat everything around it as test budget.

A B2B campaign needs a longer window before it can be judged

With a handful of enquiries a month, one good week and one quiet week already look like a trend. We agree the review period against the client's sales cycle at the start, and avoid structural changes inside it.

Platform lead count says very little on its own

The same form collects procurement enquiries, job applications and supplier pitches. We ask the sales team to mark each lead as qualified or not for the first couple of months, then optimise the account on the qualified count.

A specific service page collects better enquiries than a capabilities page

A page listing everything the firm can do leaves the visitor to work out whether any of it applies to them, and most will not spend the time. We point each campaign at a page that names the service, the type of company it suits and what happens after the form is sent.

Diagnostics

What we check first

01

Search intent

Which keywords suggest research and which suggest an active search for a provider

02

Service page

Whether the page explains the service, audience, proof and next step clearly

03

The enquiry form

A single message box tells the sales team nothing about who to call first. Our own form asks a few more questions and sorts enquiries by how ready they are

04

Sales feedback

Which leads can actually progress into a sales conversation

Channels

The campaign mix we usually run for B2B

Before they search

LinkedIn or Meta Awareness

Test

Worth testing where the buying committee is identifiable and the service is one few people search for yet

While they are searching

Brand Search

Core

In a long sales cycle a buyer searches the firm by name more than once before contacting it

Service Search

Core

The main source of enquiries. Judge a keyword on the enquiries it brings rather than on its search volume.

While they are comparing

Remarketing to service-page visitors

Support

A first visit rarely produces an enquiry in this industry, so the second and third visits are worth paying for

What the results tell us

Sales feedback on qualified enquiries

Volume is easy to buy and quality is not, so the account is steered on which enquiries the sales team could actually work with

The calendar

The B2B calendar we plan against

B2B demand does not spike around festivals. It moves with budget cycles and with who is actually at their desk.

  1. Jan to Feb

New calendar-year budgets are released, then Chinese New Year stops decision-making for one to two weeks.

We push in January and expect the fortnight around the holiday to produce very little, without reading it as a drop in performance.

  2. Mar to Apr

Financial year end for many Hong Kong companies. Remaining budget gets spent, and new budget gets planned.

A good window for proposals that need a budget decision, so we make sure the service pages and the enquiry form are in order before it.

  3. Jul to Aug

Decision-makers take leave. Enquiries still arrive but the sales cycle stretches.

We keep the budget steady and warn the client that a slower August is normal, so nobody reacts to it by cutting.

  4. Sep to Nov

The strongest stretch of the year. Everyone is back and budget is still available.

This is where we would put extra budget if there is any, rather than spreading it evenly across the year.

  5. Dec

Two working weeks, then the year effectively closes.

We wind down rather than spending into a month where nobody will pick up the enquiry.

This calendar comes from running these accounts, not from a measurement. Chinese New Year moves between January and February, so the dates around it shift each year.

The problem

Our own GA4 reported that organic search produced no enquiries at all, and that nearly every lead came from Direct. At the same time the most-used contact method on the site was WhatsApp, and that action did not exist as an event in the reports.

What we changed

We checked the instrument before we touched the channel, and found three faults. The event names the report filtered on were not the names the site was emitting. WhatsApp taps were pooled inside a shared cta_click event whose parameter had never been registered as a custom dimension, so the report could not tell which CTA had fired. And most of the Direct leads were bot submissions from two countries. We added a honeypot and a minimum fill time to stop the bots, then gave WhatsApp its own event.

What moved

84% → 0%Bot traffic's share of recorded leads
89% → 38%Direct's share of recorded leads
80%Share of enquiry actions that are WhatsApp, once it was tracked

This is a measurement change, not a performance improvement. Organic's share rose mostly because bot submissions left the denominator: its enquiries per session did not improve. CTA placement also changed within the same fortnight, so the volume of WhatsApp taps cannot be attributed to the tracking fix, only the share and the channel. The counts either side are small enough that a couple of events move a share by ten points.

Common problems

  • Targeting broad informational keywords
  • Generic service pages
  • No lead qualification
  • Optimising only to form submissions
  • Weak CRM or sales feedback
  • Combining very different B2B services in one campaign
  • Judging campaigns too quickly when sales cycles are long
